My theory is that a certain number of voters are so used to the constant warnings, so used to the cries that "The Sky is Falling," that they've come to consider them nothing more than business as usual. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard that all before" would sum up this attitude. One of the consequences of the Post-Truth reality is that superlatives can no longer be believed -- everyone uses them, all the time. When everything is superlative, nothing is; even though the Sky was, in fact, falling this time, they could not be convinced it was any more than partisan rhetoric. Or not, but it's a theory consistent with the results.
