1. The man is a straight up opportunist.

Having read Mary Trump's book describing her uncle's character and his inability to accept defeat or admit to mistakes, this s going to be an interesting run up to the election. I have two theories:

1. Trump is generally ignorant and out of touch with political issues and personalities, but fascinated and flattered easily, something that Vance, who is described by those who know him best as "slimy" in this regard, is good at. So it may be possible that a few people in the GOP, who see better chances to win the election without Trump than with him, advised this choice of a man who has already crawled halfway up his ass to get his favor and attention, in order to set up a battle of egos in order to actually bring Trump down.

2. Vance, who is a conniving schemer and at least as prolific and pathological a liar as Trump is, has engineered himself in this position to grab either the Republican nomination or the Presidency from a badly aging man who can't even stay awake during a convention session. Looking for a quick path to the Presidency, than getting elected to it.
