San Diego new car sales are on the road to recovery with EVs leading the way [View all]

After absorbing a one-two punch from the economic effects of the pandemic followed by global supply chain shortages, car and truck sales are on the rebound with San Diego County dealers reporting a 10.2 percent increase in registrations in the second quarter.

“You talk to dealers and they’ll tell you they’ve got a lot more cars (on their lots) now than they’ve had pretty much any time since the pandemic started,” said Brian Maas, president of the California New Car Dealers Association. “And when dealers have more cars, they’re going to sell more of them.”

A global shortage of semiconductor microchips that has dragged on for about two years and left many showrooms bare is beginning to ease. Though uneven, automakers report delivering more vehicles to dealers. The silicon chips essential for laptops, game consoles and TVs also go into the brake sensors, power steering, navigation and entertainment systems in modern-day vehicles.

In addition, pent-up demand for new cars in the wake of the economic effects of the pandemic has contributed to the boost in sales.

All-electric cars accounted for 22.1 percent of the San Diego market through the end of June, up from 14.3 percent last year.

The numbers across the state were the same, with the Model Y and Model 3 finishing first and second by a wide margin.
