Barbara Lee files paperwork to run for Oakland mayor [View all]
KRON) Former Rep. Barbara Lee has filed paperwork to run for Oakland mayor. According to a filing on the California Secretary of State website, Lee has filed campaign finance paperwork for a mayoral run this year.
Lee, 78, chose not to run for re-election for the congressional seat in Californias 12th district she held for the previous two years. As a congresswoman, Lee served for decades after first being elected to Californias 9th district in 1998.
She held that seat until 2013 when she was elected to represent the 13th district which she represented until 2023. Lee lost a failed bid for the U.S. Senate seat long held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
While Lee has not yet officially announced her campaign, filing paperwork with the secretary of state implies the Democrat is mulling a run to fill the office left vacant following the recall of unpopular Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao. After a tumultuous two years in office, Thao was recalled by a majority of Oakland voters in last Novembers election.
