MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Today, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder provided details of an investigation into an incident involving a Martin County Deputy, who accidentally fired a shot inside the Treasure Coast Classical Academy, a charter school in Stuart, yesterday afternoon. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

The sheriff says the deputy had the gun in his hand and was performing a dry fire before going to the range but one bullet was still left in the chamber.

“He did it inappropriately and he did it in an inappropriate place,” Sheriff Snyder stated.

The Sheriff says the incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. yesterday, around dismissal but it could have been a lot worse if classes were in session.

“It went through the wall, through the hallway into a bookcase in adjoining classroom," said Sheriff Snyder.

Dry firing is the act of pulling the trigger of a firearm without ammunition in the weapon. Although the sheriff says the deputy, who is the school resource officer, showed poor judgment, he wasn’t completely reckless.

“It was unnecessary, it was inappropriate but it wasn’t completely reckless," Snyder remarked. "He wasn’t playing with the firearm, he wasn’t handling it in a careless manner.”
