The Democrats will likely regain the majority in two years, if he wants to get some good committee seats he is much better off sticking with a party than flipping back and forth depending on who is in power. If he sticks by the Democrats I am sure they will stick by him and help him out when they regain the majority, but neither party is going to do much to help someone they can't trust to stand by them when the power shifts.
