Real ID law sucks [View all]

OK, so it's now time for me to renew my Maine driver's license. I have been a tax-paying resident and driver in the great state of Maine for 22 years. I have not, up till now, had any problem renewing my license.

But now, when I go in to renew, I must bring (for the first time) my birth certificate AND proof of Maine residency, such as a utility bill with MY NAME on it. Unfortunately, all our utility bills are under my husband's name. So I'm hoping that our joint Maine state tax return will satisfy them. If not, I'm going to have to hunt around for other papers to prove what the post office, my neighbors, and my accountant already know -- that I LIVE HERE.

WTF. I hate this new law.
