Proposed night train project gains steam, excitement from Old Orchard Beach. [View all]
OLD ORCHARD BEACH (WGME)-- People looking to get to and from Canada from parts of New England could have another option if a proposed train project comes together.
The Canadian group, Fondation Trains de Nuit, or the Night Trains Foundation, is proposing an overnight ride on the rails.
While it would take longer than driving, there's a trade-off.
"The experience of a night train is much different than taking your own cars," Fondation Trains de Nuit Board President François Pepin said. "You can have dinner, you can sleep on the train because there would be sleeping cars and there could also be some entertainment."
The train would go from Montreal to Boston, both ways, once a day to start.
The full ride would cost about $150 each way and take about 13 hours.
There could be four stops in Maine: Bethel, Auburn, Portland and Old Orchard Beach.
For Montreal, residents like Stephan Bellerose, he had to drive to the coastal community for Labor Day.
"I think it's a great idea because I'm sure it's a nice train ride you know?" Bellerose said. "It would be a great experience, I think, for a lot of people, especially those who don't have cars [and] would like to get out of the town.">>>
