Charlie Baker rules out U.S. Senate run

Urges Bill Weld to jump in if Scott Brown doesn’t

Thursday, January 31, 2013

By Hillary Chabot / Boston Herald

Former GOP gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker flatly ruled out a run for the special Senate election, saying he doesn’t “really think of myself as a senator,” but he urged his former boss and former Gov. William Weld to jump into the fray should Scott Brown decide to stay out of the race.

“I don’t really think of myself as a senator, and secondly I’m very involved in this company,” said Baker about his job as executive in residence at General Catalyst Partners in Cambridge. The Swampscott Republican has kept out of the media limelight since losing his 2010 bid for governor.

Baker declined to say whether he has discussed the race with Brown, but said the former U.S. Senator is, “keeping really close counsel and I can understand why. I’m hearing the same stuff most people are hearing, that there are issues on the one hand and issues on the other.”
