2. Generations of poverty and racism writ large.

So long as many in rural America are willing to believe right-wing hype (that all their woes are due to free-loading minorities and their Democratic enablers), rural will continue to elect people like Mitch McConnell whose very policies keep them poor and consistently at the bottom rungs for health care and education.

Racism has always cost society more than it pays, but some people will always see it as a valuable asset to be passed on to the next generation. It’s a vicious cycle, and the only winners are the Trumps, McConnells and Limbaughs of the world.
