Married N.J. spa owners used business to trade sex for money, authorities allege [View all]
A Toms River husband and wife who own a spa in town were charged last month with promoting prostitution and two counts of money laundering, the Ocean County Prosecutors Office announced Wednesday.
Wayne Lefkowitz, 56, of Toms River, and Guihua Cui, 51, were charged on April 28 and April 29, respectively, the office said. Lefkowitz and Cui are married.
The charges came after a year-long investigation by the office into the Lakewood Road business, Spa 1800, by the offices economic crime squad and special victims unit, authorities said.
Although the spa appeared to be operating as a legitimate business, people who went there were offered sexual favors in exchange for money, the office said. Investigators also claimed Lefkowitz and Cui would deposit spa proceeds into several different bank accounts to avoid state-mandated transaction reporting requirements.
