We lived six miles north of town, actually closer to the village of Pinos Altos than Silver City. We could see the Gila National Forest from our house. Could also see Mexico. Silver City is on a hummingbird migration route, and there would be throngs of them in July and August. We once counted the birds in a photograph of our feeders, and figured we had at least 100 at one time. I used to go through ten pounds of sugar a week, making nectar for the birds. All those hummingbird throngs are one of the things I miss most here in hot, humid Georgia.

Places to see: the Cliff Dwellings; the Catwalk (absolutely beautiful, outside Glenwood); City of Rocks state park, halfway between Silver City and Deming, and, of course the Gila National Forest. You can drive the Black Range to Hillsboro. Can take a couple of hours to make the drive--I absolutely refused to drive it at night, instead took the long route through Hatch. They could have filmed The Lord of the Rings in the Black Range.

Places to eat (I may be way out of date here): Jalisco's (hot Mexican food, be sure to order the sopapillas ), Diane's, Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House in Pinos Altos (seven or so miles north on Highway 15). The Buckhorn is a real saloon in one room, white tablecloth restaurant in another.

Music venues. I don't know.

Have a good time, enjoy the weather. If you are going soon, you will just miss the Monsoon, which usually starts around July 4. We were close to 7,000 feet and July and August were pure heaven.
