Supreme Court dismisses New Mexico suit against Colorado over mine spill [View all]

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a lawsuit by New Mexico’s government claiming that Colorado environmental regulators played a direct role in the spill of more than 3 million gallons of mine waste during 2015, causing an environmental disaster that polluted the San Juan and Animas rivers.

The court did not explain its decision to dismiss New Mexico’s case over the Gold King Mine spill, saying only that most justices opposed hearing the lawsuit.

New Mexico officials had argued the disaster was the result of years of environmental failings upstream in Colorado. After winning the case, Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman said the Supreme Court’s decision was a vindication of her state’s policies.

But legal wrangling over the spill continues, as New Mexico also pursues a lawsuit against the federal government and the mine’s owners for more than $100 million.
