The head of one of the private schools expressed disappointment, the usual nonsense about "We pay taxes, but our kids aren't in the public schools, so we deserve help." Poppycock. As someone who chose to send her children to private school, I have zero sympathy for that argument. At any given time, only a small percentage of taxpayers have kids in the public schools. Some people never do. I certainly don't here in New Mexico. And yet, I benefit tremendously from good public schools. Although, alas, our schools here aren't as good as they should be, but the root causes are many and complex. Meanwhile, I'm happy to pay school taxes.
