'Brunch bill' for alcohol before noon passes N.C. Senate [View all]

RALEIGH — Legislation to legalize the sale of mimosas, bloody mary cocktails and other alcoholic beverages at Sunday morning brunch in North Carolina was approved by the state Senate on Thursday afternoon.

It now is pending in the House.

The bill, Senate Bill 155, would make several major changes to North Carolina’s alcohol laws:

• It would allow alcoholic beverage sales as early 10 a.m. on Sunday; existing law says Sunday sales aren’t allowed before noon. Sunday morning sales would not happen unless the local city council or county commission approves them.

• In an unrelated matter, the legislation would loosen regulations on liquor distilleries. The changes are expected to boost their sales.

• The bill authorizes the sale of alcohol at auctions.
