Mansfield was one of at least five Democrats who were campaigning for a chance to replace Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis in next year’s election. The remaining four Democrats are state Sen. Erica Smith of Northampton County, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Trevor Fuller, Steven Williams of Durham and former state Sen. Cal Cunningham of Raleigh.

On the Republican side, Tillis must fend off Garland Tucker of Raleigh and Sandy Smith of Winterville in the Republican primary in order to reach the general election.
