2. The steel mills gave us a century of prosperity and soot - pollution of the worst kind

Personally I'm glad they are gone, but I didn't make a living from them anyway. When the steel mills closed - mostly in the 1970s and '80s - a lot of Pittsburghers were forced to move somewhere else. Nowadays the major employers in Pittsburgh are the tech companies, the universities, the medical centers, consulting engineers and such.

I think the Lonely Planet group chooses Pittsburgh as a travel destination because much of our architecture, bridges, tunnels, etc. have been preserved. There are lots of places to take cool photos here.
