A Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of Sarah Everard in south London last week.
Ms Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, went missing after leaving a friend's house in Clapham at about 9pm on March 3.
Metropolitan Police said in a statement a serving Metropolitan Police officer had been arrested at an address in Kent in connection with Ms Everard's disappearance.
"He has been taken into custody at a London police station where he remains," the statement said.
Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave said: "The arrest this evening is a serious and significant development. We will continue to work with all speed on this investigation but the fact that the arrested man is a serving Metropolitan Police officer is both shocking and deeply disturbing.
...SNIP...
The Met said a woman had also been arrested at the same location on suspicion of assisting an offender.
"She has also been taken into custody at a London police station," the police statement said.

'Arrested officer not on duty' when Sarah Everard disappeared, says assistant commissioner

I gather the disappearance of Sarah Everard is a pretty big story in the UK. Even Bloomberg Radio's overnight program "Daybreak Europe" has been covering it in their headline updates over the past several days. Related stories had reported other women being followed or harassed in this area by groups of young men or teenagers, so this arrest of an off-duty officer does come as a shock. My heart goes out to her family and friends. Naturally, I hope she is found alive; however, it doesn't look real good.
