Robert Jenrick quits frontbench over Rwanda bill, piling pressure on Sunak [View all]
Rishi Sunaks government was plunged into further crisis when the immigration minister quit just hours after the prime minister tabled a bill to save his Rwanda deportation policy.
Robert Jenrick stood down after it was revealed that the legislation did not allow the government to override the international laws that have stopped the government sending asylum seekers to central Africa.

Jenricks resignation will be seen as a move to position himself as the head of the growing rightwing rebellion aimed at ensuring that the UK can act unilaterally and send flights to Kigali.
...
Other rightwing Tory MPs were unhappy that the bill does not disapply the ECHR and believe that each asylum seeker could seek an injunction to stop being removed on a flight. I cant see how weve prevented individual legal challenges, said one MP.

The right wing of the Tories are positioning themselves; Jenrick and Braverman outside the cabinet, and Badenoch (currently) inside - though she's pushing herself as an anti-trans culture warrior: "
Gender-affirming care for children form of conversion therapy, says Badenoch" (god help us, she's the equalities minister)
Jenrick has a long record of dubious behaviour over Covid, and planning permission:
