2. I think I figured it out

The Apogee ONE interface has 2 inputs. I didn't have the right input selected. The software wanted to know if I wanted input 1 or input 2. Of course thy are not marked on the hardware.
I signed up for one on one help ($100/year) when I bought my iMac, and have been making use of it. About 40 min drive to the Apple store, and my skin starts to crawl when I walk in the Cherry Creek Mall, (very upscale), but going for help about every other week. The Apple store is always busy, tons of people in there.
