1. Be careful ... my iMac really slowed as a result

It's five years old and needs to be replaced, but I want it to hang in there until the (rumored) new rentina iMacs are released, hopefully soon.

I think Mavericks is designed to work with newer machines sporting more RAM (the new iMacs come with 8 by default; the older ones 4), and since I'm running some high-powered Adobe graphics the slow-down in speed is really noticeable. What used to be a great iMac now huffs and puffs through Creative Cloud software.

My suggestion: give some thought to the programs you run and your machines' speed and memory before upgrading. Then again, you may have no choice as I imagine Apple will drop support of Snow Leopard when Yosemite is released.
