3. I'm not sure where the network connection settings are in Ubuntu 10.10

I'm using Linux Mint 12 now.

On my system it's in the Settings menu -> Network Connections. The cable modem should show as a Wired connection. Select "edit" and under IPv4 settings - "Method" should be set to "Automatic (DHCP)"

This tells the computer to get the network settings from the cable modem.
