1. Why does Ahold Delhaize have so many brands in the US?

Seems I recall Delhaize before merging with Ahold owned other store brands in the US, particularly in the SE US. Giant, and its two variations, and that another old time US food retailer. And Delhaize owned Bottom Dollar, which they closed entirely and sold stores to ALDI.

Ahold closes a lot of stores. Over many years but still closings.

Ahold almost went under in the Great Recession.
