Brown Mackie College shutting down many campuses throughout the country [View all]
Brown Mackie parent Education Management Corp. on Friday announced it would stop enrolling new students at 22 of the school's 26 campuses, including the one at Circle Centre mall. The for-profit education company plans to continue serving existing students through June 2018, spokesman Bob Greenlee said.
The decision "largely relates to regional and student demand," Greenlee said. "Demand at various programs and at various campuses is what drove the decision to cease enrolling new students."
Brown Mackie's plan to ramp down most of its campuses comes as for-profit educators are getting pummeled by the federal government amid accusations of misleading advertising and poor employment options for graduates. Pittsburgh-based Education Management in November reached an agreement to pay the government $95.5 million to settle claims that it used high-pressure tactics to recruit students.
Carmel-based ITT Educational Services Inc. is facing the loss of its accreditation as part of the government crackdown on for-profit colleges.
