... just as they were when high quality fuel efficient Japanese automobiles transformed the U.S. market in the 'seventies. A Chevy Vega or Ford Pinto was wretched in comparison to a Toyota.

Even with subsidies I'm not sure American manufacturers will ever catch up with Japanese, South Korean, and Chinese manufacturers in the consumer market.

The U.S. heat pump industry has kept up with larger scale equipment of the sort used in schools, large apartment complexes, shopping centers, and industry.
