Klamath River dam removal is complete! [View all]
Klamath River, CA October 2 was a momentous day on the Klamath River, since it marked the complete removal of the four lower PacifICorp hydroelectric dams. The dam removal will restore salmon and steelhead to hundreds of miles of habitat of the river and tributaries above the dams.
Copco No. 1, Copco No. 2, J.C. Boyle, and Iron Gate Dams had blocked fish passage and impaired water quality for over a century. Huge harmful algae blooms took place in the reservoirs and river below the dams for decades.
The removal of the dams wouldnt have been possible without over two decades of efforts, including direct action, by grassroots Tribal members, environmental activists and fishermen.
Dream big
dreams do come true...the worlds largest dam removal project is done! said Dania Colegrove, Hoopa Valley Tribe member and long-time advocate for dam removal on the Klamath.
