If you do not understand that is how non-violent protest works, that's a shame. It's something, like People's War, a good leftist ought to be familiar with. The point of the exercise is to provoke one's opponent to violence, which in the case of non-violent protest, is always disproportionate. The intent, anyway, is to show one's opponent in a bad light, in hopes this will result in increased support for your side, or less support for your opponent, anyway. Had they been met with tea and cakes, the demonstration would have been an abject failure.

The problem with the approach here, at least with me, is that I really do not give a fuck. I know perfectly well what the situation in the Jordan valley is, and on Oct. 6, 2023, I would have cared about injustice in the occupied territories. I don't now. Hamas and its supporters have made the cause of Arab Palestine an unclean thing.
