I first saw it on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. It's a form of sadism, and a sexual disorder where the urge to have intercourse is sublimated into penetrating the victim with sharp objects such as pins or knives (as an ersatz phallus). In the episode, the suspect used long, fancy hat pins to stab women in crowds, then kept the pins as trophies..
