and I'm sorry a family member is already ill.

It seems pretty clear we're going to have a wave of it this spring and quite probably a stronger wave of it next tall and winter, if past viral epidemics are any indication. By this time next year, people who haven't gotten it yet might even have a vaccine available.

I just don't like people self isolating over nothing because by the time they might need to quarantine, they will be out of supplies and suffering from cabin fever.

In your case, avoiding crowds, especially crowded mass transit, good handwashing, and keeping your fingers away from your face will go a long way toward keeping you safe. Self quarantine won't stop this one, as eventually you'll need to order foodstuffs and bring in mail and this virus persists on surfaces and can be brought to you that way. Good handwishing is paramount.
