Chicken culls aren't that infrequent. Bird flu can not only wipe out whole flocks, it can easily spread to other area farms. Culling flocks in which chickens have been found to be infected is the only control. H5N8 is known to pass to humans, but it's one of the less virulent flu types, although some studies claim it is becoming more virulent as time goes on.

At least this isn't the H5N1 bird flu they've found in Chinese waterfowl. While that one doesn't move human to human, it has a 60% fatality rate in people who have caught it from infected birds.
