Breast Cancer Awareness Month is nearly 30 years old this year – after three decades and billions of dollars, why is this disease still an epidemic?

It’s the government’s job to protect the health of those it governs, but our government has outsourced breast cancer to large philanthropic organizations, like Komen and Avon, which are beholden to corporate funders. This strategy is not working for women.

Our elected officials should be taking bold, meaningful action for breast cancer prevention and better breast cancer treatments through independent research and strong regulation. It’s time for us to say, “enough with the pink crap!” and demand real action on breast cancer from our elected representatives.

In the 1960’s, a woman’s lifetime risk for breast cancer was 1 in 20. Today, for every woman who lives to be 85, her lifetime risk is 1 in 8. This year, like last year, 40,000 women will die of breast cancer. These numbers are not OK.

Breast cancer should be front and center in national conversations about health reform and women’s health – now! In anticipation of November’s election, we’re rolling out our Mandate for Government Action and need your help getting it into the hands of elected officials and candidates for public office.

Tell your legislators today to publicly support the 2012 Breast Cancer Action Mandate for Government Action.

It’s not enough for our elected officials to “support the cause” by wearing a pink ribbon or sharing a heartfelt personal story about breast cancer. Elected officials have a unique and essential role to initiate and support independent research and strong regulation to address and end the breast cancer epidemic.

As individuals we cannot shop or walk or run our way out of this epidemic. Our legislators must take meaningful action to address and end this epidemic – let’s light the fire under them to do it.
