1. I used wall liner paper years ago in situation much like yours.

It worked well and held up at least 10 years when we sold that house. As I recall, it was similar in application as wall paper but somewhat easier in that there's is no pattern to match at seams etc.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you try it.
