If your heart is in it, you can do it. It takes a lot of work and time, but you obviously know this already. The best advice I can give you is buy a horse that suits YOU. Don't pick the prettiest, the flashiest, the one your friend likes -- unless you LOVE the horse. I've seen so many people buy a horse for dumb reasons. You want to enjoy the beast, not be afraid or have it become a chore. Then, read up! I suggest Equus, since they cover a lot of issues. Ask questions! It's one of the most fulfilling things you can have in your life, and I wish you well! Happy Trails!
