My own family has always been practically a matriarchy. That's pretty much all I knew growing up in a black family. And this arrangement is also quite common with other black families as well.
But when I went out into the world and started to realize how patriarchy was the norm in white society, especially with the dismissive treatment of women, I was shocked.
I'm still shocked by it.
