Civil rights icon John Lewis says Donald Trump will motivate black voters -- to vote for Hillary Cli [View all]
SUNRISE John Lewis, a Democratic congressman and civil rights icon, said Sunday that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's attempts in recent days to sell himself to black voters are destined to fail.
Lewis said Trump would motivate black voters to turn out for the 2016 elections so they can vote against him and for Democrat Hillary Clinton. He said Trump could help prevent black voter turnout from falling from the highs it reached in the past two elections, when the nation was electing and re-electing its first black president.
"People are frightened. They know they must turn out. They get the message. They read the newspapers. They listen to the radio. They watch television. They've heard it. It's too late for this man to try to turn anybody around," Lewis said in a brief interview after a day of church visits and political activities in Broward County.
"Mr. Trump is dangerous. He wants to divide America, and not bring America together. We need someone who has the capacity and the ability to heal, and not divide," he said.
