But, it seems that a very rigid definition of racism, limited to what the author identified as "the poster child" serves to perpetuate the harshest acts and attitudes by letting people who trade in bigotry without malice off the hook.

Something I took from Uncle Tom's Cabin was that the "nice" slave owners were instrumental in perpetuating the system and therefore enabling those who were cruel. As long as there was an exception to the rule, soft abolitionists would not rock the boat. Thus, it took a couple of centuries for that barbaric system to even be challenged.
