My personal favorite as an old Cub fan was Kenny Holtzman. Holtzman was even used as a pinch hitter in the AL with the As after the DH rule was in effect.

If you were referring to Cloninger hitting, when he hit the two Grannys he was playing for the Braves in the NL which never had the DH.

The Cardinals had a powerful group of hitting pitchers lead by Bob Gibson in the 60s.
