Why Medium Doesn't Matter Anymore

Medium brought in the new year by laying off 50 people and closing 2 offices. No champagne, no resolutions — January was all about downsizing for them. Given their outstanding reputation, this came as a surprise....

It’s an especially unfortunate choice since Medium's site is full of amateur content. They say they only charge for premium writing, but it's still hard to accept. It's like they're walling off YouTube videos. With the exception of major motion pictures and TV shows, YouTube doesn’t charge anything. No one wants to drop $5 a month to watch kittens wrestle balls of yarn. If Medium follows YouTube’s exact model, it could work.
