This kind of thing has been going on forever. A goodish proportion of "Good, God-fearing Christians" have always had adulterous affairs, stolen from their friends, neighbors, and business associates, beaten their wives and kids, got drunk and/or used drugs, molested children, etc. etc. etc. And, their co-religionists have always tended to defend them, long past the time it became indecent to do so. This is nothing new.
