Sore loser Thune says the stimulus bill is a ‘liberal wish list.' He’s wrong. The bill is actually a 'needs list.'

Our Sen. John Thune is so immersed in partisan hatred of Joe Biden’s stimulus package, which just passed the Senate and moves on to assured passage in the House of Representatives, that he doesn’t get the point of Biden’s initiative. Thune calls it a “liberal wish list.”

That has a nice Republican ring to it, but coming from a guy whose GOP economic policies turned out to be a dud in recent years, Thune’s complaint is as empty as it is predictable.

So what is this “wish list” that Thune decries? Yahoo.money gives a nice summary, saying, “the legislation includes stimulus payments, the extension of key unemployment programs that are set to lapse in the spring, aid to small businesses, around $350 billion to state and local governments, an increase in tax credits for low- and middle-income families, and $160 billion for a national program on vaccination and testing.”

This looks more like a ‘needs list’ than a wish list, and the economy will respond smartly as the money from the plan begins to circulate. The key word here is ‘circulate.’ Thune and his GOP colleagues failed to invigorate the economy with their much touted tax cut for the rich in 2017, which led to massive deficits and subpar economic growth. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee, two years into the cut, put out a report titled “Two Years of Evidence Show 2017 Tax Cuts Failed to Deliver Promised Economic Boost.”
