We're all upset about Trump. So what next? 2018 midterms are just 2 years away. How can Democrats get more people voting in these critical but poorly attended elections?
Here is my proposal and I was curious if other Democrats thought this was a good idea. It’s just a rough idea so it invariably needs tweaking. So there are 3 to 4 million Americans who earn their living off of tipping i.e. restaurant wait staff, Uber, Lyft, pizza delivery etc. A lot of whom are millennials and gen-x. Democrats are known as good tippers and active consumers of these services. I suggest we create a campaign for Democrats to talk to these employees about the importance of voting. It's a touchpoint in our daily lives when we can encourage new people we meet with a brief message. We can even take that to the tipping itself. I was thinking something of a branded campaign (TipTheVote.org???) that we encourage them to register to vote and positively stating that Democrats tip even more generously to registered voters (of either party). I am thinking in 15% for non-voters and 20% plus range if they are voters (or promise to vote). There are 72M registered Democrats in the US. Let's assume 5% of Democrats join this campaign which is 3.6M or roughly one to one with number of tipped employees. So if we engage twice week, then employees obviously are proselytize twice a week. Which seems a good amount not to be over burdening but reinforces the importance. The campaign can even provide buttons or sticker they can display (maybe just to shut Democrats up and get a better tip). I imagine a button stating “I will vote 2018” or something.
The demographics of millennials and gen-x are well known, leaning Democratic but poor showing at the polls. But any increase at midterms though could be a big boost in local, down ballot races and Congressional seats.
