2. Years ago, I knew a woman who had served as a missionary in the Marshal Islands

She loved the people she met there, but confessed a fear for what her time there might mean for her future health.

Watching a documentary at one point, I was struck by the knowledge that she probably knew most of the people I saw on the screen.

I also knew a man who was a Navy corpsman at “Operation Crossroads.” He got to deal with sailors who were ill-prepared for their “mission.” (These sailors are “decontaminating” a ship that has just survived a nuclear blast.)
