Problem is that now indoor growing lends itself to a more controlled environment. Because of being forced underground and the development of so many cross breeds much of the genetics (traits) for outdoor growing has been diminished. The emphasis on THC production along with the development of terpenes more beneficial for flavor and smell, instead of for insect and disease protection will keep cannabis manufacturing indoors.

There are breeders that are going back to the basics for outdoor growing. There is a seed breeder in Michigan that breeds Autoflower strains that can flourish in a Michigan outdoor climate or in a grow tent if desired. They can handle temperatures in the low 40’s, have a greatly reduced need for fertilizers are smaller in stature and can be trained to produce more than one cola. With a quick turnaround time because of quickly flowering plants ready for harvest in about 3-4 months. 3 grow cycles can be accomplished within one year with a combination of outdoor and indoor growing. This is based on the assumption that modular growing techniques are utilized (grow bags). In ground outdoor using a succession planting schedule 2 grow cycles are possible.
