In that regard any hope they quasi realistically had to somehow win the nomination was dependent on Biden self destructing in a one on one debate. I doubt the Sanders inner circle was ever seriously counting on it. However it wasn't impossible. No one has seen Biden in a one on one debate in eight years, and he was less then impressive in many of the group debates that had been held earlier this year. Even when the odds are slim that one will draw an inside straight flush on the final card dealt to you, once you have stayed in the game until that point, if the added cost to stay in for that final card is minimal, few would choose to fold their cards before that last card was dealt.

Some Sanders supporters deluded themselves into thinking that it was likely Biden would self destruct, but it never was.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
