(5,241 posts)"Streaming" specifically means it's delivered over the internet, not over the air or via cable/satellite.
The streaming service providers are NOT equivalent to channels. As someone else said, they are more akin to a library of offerings, or maybe like a studio with a deep back catalog of things. They shuffle some of their available offerings monthly.
The PRIMARY difference, though, is watching is always on-demand. This means you find and watch your film or show whenever you want to, provided the streaming service is offering it at the time. Even the slight exception to this, where premium shows release an episode per week, you can watch the episode anytime after it's been released because it's on-demand viewing.
How do you know what's streaming where? There is no equivalent to TV guide because a "schedule" doesn't apply. I use an app called JustWatch. When I'm looking for something , I search JustWatch to figure out if it's currently streams if so, where.
One last twist to this tale: In the past, you purchased box sets of shows you wanted to have available to you whenever you wanted to watch it. This is still a good practice! But. You can also purchase the streaming season or series from Amazon Prime or Apple.
