2. Popham Beach is pretty special

It's a broad beach which connects to an islet during low tide. Lots of tidal pools and room to spread out. It's a unique experience.

One thing about Maine geography is that the coastline is a series of long rocky outcrops. So, unlike places where you can essentially drive along the coast from town to town, you do have to make some decisions about which coastal areas to visit.

If you really don't like crowds, skip Commercial St. in Portland.
