which is the big problem. May's deal will get voted down both by hardline leavers who don't like the 'backstop' arrangement designed to prevent a hard customs border with Ireland, and by remainers, and the Labour leadership who have said they will exit the EU, but go for a customs union and single market deal which will involve some form of free movement of labour.

No-one can decide if a new referendum would help; if there was one, should it have just 2 options (in which case, which 2), or 3, with some form of 2nd preference voting.

It's a mess.
