Generally people are chosen who have given decades of work for the party. They mighht be a county chairman who has volunteered for 50 years.
It's just an honor.
Not the group of Republicans likely to vote for Hillary.

Not a coup. The Electors are free agents. They can vote for anyone they want, constitutionally.
